Diagnose Your Vehicle
Very often, your brakes will give you warning signs that could indicate a potential problem. Here are just a few things you should be aware of to keep your vehicle running safely and smoothly.
Pull –
A vehicle that pulls to one side when braking may indicate an under-inflated tire, maladjusted brakes or other brake repair issues.
Grab –
Touchy brakes that grab with the least pressure may indicate a problem as simple as grease or oil contaminated linings - or something potentially serious like a loose or broken component.
Drag –
Sticking brakes, hot wheels, or failing engines may be a sign of brakes failing to release which can lead to nonfunctioning brakes.
Squeal –
Brakes should operate with a minimal amount of noise. Some noise is normal but excessive squeal, screech, grinding, groaning, chatter, clatter or bang means your brakes need
attention.
Low Pedal –
If your pedal nearly touches the floorboard before brakes function, this could require either a simple adjustment or be a sign of more serious trouble. Low pedal problems may also be indicated by the activation of your vehicle's brake warning light.
Hard Pedal –
The use of extreme pressure to make brakes operate can indicate a number of things from power brake trouble and restricted hydraulic lines to frozen calipers or damaged brake linings.
Vibration –
Brake pedal, steering wheel or entire vehicle shakes, vibrates or pulsates when brake is applied. May indicate need to resurface disk brake rotors - or signal a serious problem of a loose component or faulty steering
mechanism.
Brake Light –
If your emergency brake is not engaged, this could be the sign of serious trouble and should be immediately addressed.
